What is it like to be single and a mother of a child with autism?

What is it like to be single and a mother of a child with autism?
This study will explore the experiences of single mothers of children diagnosed with autism relative to social support utilizing a qualitative framework with grounded theory methods. Grounded theory has been chosen specifically for this study because it offers depth and richness, and can capture nuances, processes and experiences that positivistic methods do not address The current research to date documents the specific stresses of parenting a child with autism and single motherhood has been scarce. Because so little is known about single mothers with autistic children, the study of parental perceptions is important to explore so as to provide the best possilbe services for you and your child.
We are looking for single mothers who have a child/children diagnosed with autism to complete an in-depth interview in regards to your experience with your child and with supports systems. This interview will be strictly confidential and would take place in the beginning of February 2008.
This study hopes to explore single mothers' experiences of raising an autisticchild and the supports that they receive. This information can provide valuable information about how to maintain the integrity of the family relationship utilizing supports as you attempt to deal with your child.
For participating in this study, you will receive a $10.00 gift certificate to Applebee’s Restaurant or a $10.00 metrocard.
